What Sewing Machines Are Good For Bag Making?

Often, I'm asked questions like: What kind of sewing machine do you use? What's the difference between a domestic machine and an industrial machine? Do I need an industrial sewing machine?

In this guide, we will answer all of these frequently asked questions. Today, we'll focus on sewing machines. There are so many different sewing machines on the market, but don't let that intimidate you. You may be able to get started with bag making on the domestic machine you have at home. However, depending on the materials you'll be working with and the features you need, you may want to invest in an industrial machine.

Domestic Sewing Machines

Domestic sewing machines tend to be smaller, lighter, and quieter than their industrial counterparts. They typically do more than one thing, meaning they can sew forward and backward and have a wide variety of stitches for decorating your projects.

Industrial Sewing Machines

Industrial sewing machines are designed for, well, industrial use. These machines are larger and more powerful than domestics, and they usually come with a table. They also differ from multipurpose domestic machines because they typically do one specific thing and do it very well.

Questions you need to ask before buying  a new machine

1. What am I going to use this machine for?

Are you just making bags? Are you also sewing garments, doing embroidery, and other projects? If you're just making bags, a straight stitch machine seems to be the most recommended by our mailing list. But this is not going to work if you want to do garment sewing and for example need to sew stretch fabrics.

2. What materials/fabrics do you want to sew?

If you love using cotton, waxed canvas, cork for your bag making, a straight stitch machine will work great for you. But if you want to use lots of vinyl and leather, an industrial machine is probably more suited to your needs. Also bear in mind that straight stitch and industrial sewing machines are generally no more expensive than a good domestic machine.
